The Epic of Turbine Downtime: Tracking, Automating, and Reporting (EDF Renewables)
With thousands of turbines distributed across North America, EDF Renewables sought a tool to better monitor and measure the efficiency of the Return to Service of turbines down over 72 hours. In addition to helping identify improvement opportunities, the tool is providing transparency for stakeholders, reducing the manual effort required by site managers, improving issue escalation, and quantifying the cost of delays, all through an intuitive web application accessible across the enterprise. Utilizing Asset Analytics, Event Frames, and an AF SDK-based service, this session will cover how we’ve created a sophisticated system that
-Tracks long-term downtime events and provides a method for updating their status
-Automates, and notifies stakeholders of, event open and close
-Reports KPIs such as average/median downtime, lost revenue, and classifications
Implemented over the past 10 months, the downtime tracking tool has become the cornerstone of EDFR’s performance optimization initiative.
10:15 AM - 11:00 AM
EDP: Providing Power Generation Fleet Wide Real-Time Awareness and Key Decision Support via PI AF
Data is becoming one of the most important assets in every company. There are massive loads of data being created every second. At EDP Produção we have all our Power Plants generating data by the second thanks to the PI System, where we have approximately 400,000 Tags from about 120 power generating units. But how can we make that data useful to our executives, that need to make the upmost important decisions on a regular basis? Where can they access the most important indicators on a business that runs 24 hours a day, 365 days a year? With a mix of real time and consolidated data, processed and organized with PI-AF, we can feed through PI Web API an enterprise app that has all the key indicators of our Power Plants and the Iberian Energy Market. Now, everyone on the company can have an overview on how the business is running in a matter of seconds. In this paper, it will be described in detail the solution and architecture of this implementation.
11:15 AM - 12:00 PM
Impacts across the Organization: Uniper's Digitization Journey with OSIsoft EA deployment
It has been 2 years since Uniper’s Digitization journey began, with PI positioned as the backbone of fleet wide real-time data infrastructure.
In this presentation, we will demonstrate the tangible value we have achieved during the program, including how PI has been embedded in different processes and departments across the whole organization.
Its out-of-box functionalities in data analytics and visualization, and its capabilities to be easily integrated with other platforms such as Data Lakes in MS Azure has allowed Uniper to automate and standardize reports across sites and at a central level. With the PI System, industry subject matter experts and engineers are fully empowered to perform advanced, contextualized analyses to solve their daily business challenges.
Finally we will show a demo of how PI System contributes to plant reliability management, using PI Asset Framework, Event Frame, Notification, PI Vision, and the PI Integrator for Business Analytics.
1:45 PM - 2:30 PM
The Robin platform: how PI evolved to the core of one of Engie’s leading digital platforms
Since 2006, PI went through an organizational and functional evolution within Engie's Business Unit Generation Europe (BU Gen). As of 2017, the PI infrastructure has been further consolidated on a private cloud and was branded as ROBIN. It is considered one of Engie’s leading OT platforms. The strategic choice to host all BU Gen applications on the same private cloud accelerated the deployment of satellite apps that orbit around ROBINs PI-based core to fulfill specific business needs: displaying real-time asset status, performing inspection rounds, checking equipment safety and logging operational events. A standardized approach for using PI, AF, Analytics and PI Vision in a joint effort with subject matter experts lead to the creation of condition monitoring and performance calculation modules. Currently other subsidiaries of the Engie group are adopting the ROBIN platform thanks to the flexibility, functionality, scale of PI and the service provided by our in-house competence center.
2:45 PM - 3:30 PM
Condition Monitoring: Enabling efficient Maintenance (Statkraft)
During 2017 Statkraft decided to implement an OSIsoft PI System Solution as a Common Data Platform (CDP) for collecting and storing data from our wind and hydro assets. This have enabled us to move on to data-driven projects, one of them being the Hydro Dashboard Project (Condition Monitoring: Enabling efficient Maintenance)

Main presenter: Camilla Feurst, Statkraft (Responsible for Digitalization HydroPower)

As a leading company in hydropower internationally and Europe’s largest generator of renewable energy, we think many will benefit from taking part in our experiences from this project.
3:30 PM - 4:00 PM
What you need to know about the PI System, DERS and Cybersecurity
Power generation from Distributed Energy Resources (DER) is expanding rapidly. As a global leader in deployment of DER, California is stepping up efforts to address cybersecurity concerns. This presentation highlights activity in a consortium of leading researchers, major US utilities and industry stakeholders to advance DER cybersecurity. Topics include current state, threat models and overall security objectives. We summarize security guidelines that apply to the PI System and approaches you can use for safe and reliable DER integration.
